Whitehaven Harbour

Whitehaven Harbour in Cumbria lies at the cusp of two eras of development: Georgian terraces to the southwest and more recent, large mixed-use buildings to the northeast. Our design for 40 new apartments and 4,000m2 of commercial space seeks to reconcile this inconsistency with sensitively scaled massing and an echo of gridiron town planning. A dark, undulating roofscape recalls both gable roofs and Whitehaven’s former maritime past, while a new, permeable ground floor reconnects town and marina, terminating at an elevated terrace overlooking the harbour from the restored Victorian bathhouse.
