HEAD OF CONSERVATION

Matthew joined Austin-Smith:Lord in 2018 and leads conservation projects across the UK, helping clients manage change within complex historic places through evidence-led conservation, integrated design and long-term stewardship.

His work spans museums, universities, civic buildings, scheduled monuments and historic estates. He has expertise in understanding how historic buildings have evolved, diagnosing the causes of deterioration and developing conservation strategies that balance heritage significance with contemporary use.

Working closely with colleagues across Austin-Smith:Lord’s multidisciplinary practice, Matthew helps integrate conservation thinking into wider design decisions from the earliest stages of a project. Recent projects include Old College Aberystwyth, Bristol Museum & Art Gallery, Swansea Castle and Newport Transporter Bridge.

He also has extensive experience supporting funding applications and developing the technical and conservation evidence needed to unlock investment in major heritage projects.
