New School of Healthcare Sciences Unveiled in Cardiff: A State-of-the-Art Hub for Immersive Learning

We are proud to announce the completion of the School of Healthcare Sciences for Cardiff University. Designed by Austin-Smith:Lord, the facility stands as a unified hub, boasting cutting-edge simulation hospital facilities and immersive simulation teaching spaces. We were appointed by AECOM in 2021 to undertake the project design as a key member of their multidisciplinary team through the SEWTAPS framework.

Strategically located adjacent to the UHW hospital site, the School of Healthcare Sciences is perfectly situated for seamless integration into the medical community. The project, undertaken in four phases, has transformed former military and office spaces into a modern educational centre.

The centrepiece of the development is Block 2, featuring clinical training areas, simulation hospital wards, classrooms, and offices, providing an immersive learning environment. Block 4 offers postgraduate study spaces and staff offices, fostering collaboration and innovation.

Sustainable specification has been key for all new finishes. The project includes upgrades to improve the building’s energy efficiency and upgrades accessibility for all users. The design team has overcome challenges presented by the existing building, such as limited structural capacity and low head heights, through innovation and careful coordination in the 3D environment.

Embracing a contemporary industrial design with nods to mid-century aesthetics, the School of Healthcare Sciences exudes a vibrant atmosphere. Biophilic design elements enhance student and staff well-being, integrating nature-inspired features throughout the facility.

This project represents an important step forward in medical education at Cardiff University, paving the way for new teaching methods and collaborative research initiatives.

“Our team is proud to have played such a key role in transforming this former military hospital with a tired institutional feel into a modern hub for healthcare education. This project underscores our commitment to innovation and creating spaces that foster collaboration and learning.” Kate Thomas, Director, Austin-Smith:Lord
