George joined the Austin-Smith:Lord Landscape team in 2023. He has a strong background in education-focused projects and has shaped external spaces for many schools, taking concepts from design to reality. He has also left his mark on numerous residential and commercial projects, offering innovative design solutions with a practical mindset.

George has a keen eye for detailing and is dedicated to problem-solving in challenging schemes.

James Morris

James Morris

James is an accomplished and skilled technically focused architect with experience in various sectors, most notably in heritage, conservation, community and leisure projects.

He enjoys working closely with clients, stakeholders, and the wider design team to understand the complexities and challenges of each project and develop the most efficient and effective design solutions.

His recent projects include the sustainable reuse and repurposing of Old College, a Grade I and II listed building in Aberystwyth, and the adaptive reuse of a former Debenhams store in Carmarthen to create a Community Hub.

James also forms part of our BIM and Quality Management working groups, which focus on driving efficient workflows and the best quality outputs for the practice. Outside of the office, James enjoys keeping active and has a passion for music, cycling and rugby.

Róisín Hanlon

Róisín Hanlon

Róisín joined Austin-Smith: Lord in 2023, having previously worked in practices in several fields including; education, conservation, residential and third sector. Her most recent projects were largely Education – delivering prestigious University, College and School facilities. Her passion for creating high quality teaching spaces is informed by her other role as a part-time Design Tutor at the University of Liverpool.  She has a keen interest in architectural education generally, particularly in making it as open and accessible as possible.

Róisín has an interest in concept driven design, and enjoys engaging with stakeholders to place people at the centre of design. A keen writer, Róisín has also written columns were she endeavours to introduce architectural subjects to a broad audience in an accessible way.

Joanne Kenny

Joanne Kenny

Joanne joined Austin-Smith:Lord in 2023 as Bid Coordinator. She provides practice-wide support to our sector leaders and technical teams submitting proposals for new projects, particularly those with a strong regeneration focus delivering social and environmental improvements.

Joanne has a keen interest in journalism and modern languages with a background in the translation and production of design services proposal documents for projects in the far east.

Omkar Deshmankar

Omkar Deshmankar

Omkar joined the practice as a RIBA Part II Architectural Assistant after having completed his Architecture Degree at the University of Pune, India, and his Masters at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow.

Omkar has a keen interest in exploring and sculpting designs in a dense context integrated with the urban aquatic network. His thesis was based on the integration of the River Clyde with Glasgow through interventions of different typologies and spatial combinations which also helped to catalyse growth of the communities along the River Clyde. The Masters Dissertation explored in detail the urban-water dynamics of different cities in order to highlight its effects on climate change mitigation.

Apart from architecture, Omkar is also passionate about the environment and loves travelling, hillwalking and photography.

Abbi studied at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, before joining Austin-Smith:Lord at the end of August 2022 as a Part II Architectural Assistant. Our one-studio approach enabled Abbi to relocate from Glasgow to Cardiff, where she is now based.

Gillian Lewis-Spencer

Gill joined Austin-Smith:Lord in 2021 as Central Administrator.

Based in our Cardiff Studio, Gill helps to ensure the smooth running of the studio, as well as providing support to other studios across the practice.

In her spare time, Gill enjoys walking and spending time with her two Shiba Inus.

David Carr

David joined the practice as a Part II architectural assistant in 2021, having graduated from the University of Sheffield where he achieved a distinction.

David has a keen interest in sustainable design, particularly where it pertains to the utilisation of low impact materials and building methods, as well as the wholesale reduction of carbon in a building’s life cycle. His Master’s dissertation explored achieving these reductions in Somerset by learning lessons from the past and transferring local vernacular knowledge into contemporary design and practices.

He also takes a great interest in visualisation and the ability to experience a space in multiple media, whether it be with a photoshopped CGI or within a 3D VR experience.

Thierry Lye

Thierry Lye

Thierry joined the Glasgow team after years of working across the UK and Ireland. Qualified since 2019, Thierry has been working in various sectors including healthcare, workplace (clinical & non-clinical), and transport. With his experience in two high profile projects – the AstraZeneca Headquarter in Cambridge and the New Children’s Hospital in Dublin, Thierry is confident in working within the complex environment of large scale projects and is a good team player in pushing for the best quality of design and architecture. Some might say that he has ‘the eyes of beauty’.

Thierry is a chartered member of both the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS), and currently the EDI lead within the practice. Outside work Thierry volunteers for New Glasgow Society (Chairperson) and Scottish Civic Trust (Planning and Architecture Lead), where he tirelessly promotes the built environment in Glasgow and Scotland via exhibitions, walks and talks.

Thierry is passionate about climate justice, passivhaus design and circular economy.

Rita Pacheco

Rita Pacheco

MA(Hons) Landscape Architecture CMLI APAP

In every project, Rita endeavours to work together with clients, stakeholders, and the community to create places where people can expand relationships with each other and the world around them; to improve the quality of life, support biodiversity, and search for sustainable strategies to transition and address the Climate Emergency.

Rita has over two decades working as a Landscape Architect and has been living in Scotland since 2014. She has worked on a wide range of project types including design competitions, urban parks, education, healthcare and public open spaces.

Before joining A-S:L as a Senior Landscape Architect in 2020, she worked in Proap and F|C studios in Portugal and with erz and LUC in Scotland. She is an award-winning designer, including working as an independent professional. In 2011, Rita co-won Livada Postei Urban Park’s first prize in Brasov, Romania.

Rita is a chartered member of the Landscape Institute since 2014 and holds a Licentiates Degree and a Master of Landscape Architecture with Honours from the University of Lisbon.
