Strategic Coordination Centre
Austin-Smith:Lord’s first commission under the Government’s Buying Solutions Framework, the Strategic Coordination Centre for Dyfed Powys Police, was one of the most rapid projects the Practice has ever delivered. Appointment was at the end of October 2009 and a Planning Application was submitted in mid-December, with construction commencing in April 2010 and completion achieved in September 2011.
The Strategic Coordination Centre provides a modern emergency service and protects the public in civil emergencies or major incidents, in addition to providing an important base for Police and multi-agency training.
Political and economic pressures created tight project timescale but we rose to the challenge; meeting all timescale and budget targets whilst producing a high quality, critically acclaimed building.
From the outset the design team and client worked closely to develop the project brief and agree the concept design. It was important that the building reflected its status in its appearance, being of a suitable quality and aesthetic and incorporating a variety of sustainable features. The design was developed to create clarity and legibility of the overall concept in plan and 3 dimensional forms and is configured in an ‘H’ shape, with the two wings of accommodation slipped relative to one another. The building is set on a North-West/South-East main axis, with the principal elevations facing to open aspects, maximizing views out and daylight penetration in.
I was very satisfied with the level and quality of the Architectural Services provided by Austin-Smith:Lord throughout the whole of the project period

The centralisation of bus facilities at these sites was a key element of both Oldham Council’s town centre regeneration strategy and Transport for Greater Manchester’s development strategy
The centralisation of bus facilities at Cheapside/West Street is a key element of Oldham Council’s evolving town centre strategy, and provides an important opportunity to further enhance the vitality and viability of the town centre. It serves to promote the increased use of public transport at a time when there is increasing concern about sustainable and environmentally damaging growth in car use.
The building integrates all the bus services in the town and represents the first of a new “21st Century” style of bus station in Greater Manchester.
The station provides a user friendly environment, with a high degree of shelter and comfort for passengers, taking into account personal safety, security and accessibility.
Further to designing the new Central Bus Station at Oldham Cheapside, Austin-Smith:Lord were commissioned to undertake design and contract administration services on the redevelopment of the adjacent passenger waiting environment at Oldham West Street.
The aim for the redevelopment of West Street is the siting and construction of a centralised waiting environment which affords bus users modern and extensive facilities including an attractive and user friendly waiting area; a high degree of shelter and comfort for passengers; personal safety, security and accessibility; and an overall environment that promotes a greater use of public transport.
The design responds to a number of challenges which includes a sloping site, adjacent city centre shopping centre and Manchester Chambers (listed). The intended area is split into two levels to minimise gradients , and fully glazed elevations are used to improve legibility and safety.

Piccadilly Place Masterplan + External Works
Piccadilly Place is one of the largest urban regeneration projects to be built outside London in the last 20 years. Austin-Smith:Lord has played a key role in delivering the scheme for Argent and The Carlyle Group by first developing the masterplan and then designing the largest office building on the site, 3 Piccadilly Place. The masterplan includes high quality public realm, a hotel, four office buildings, residential accommodation and retail spaces together with over four floors of underground parking. In the role of concept designers, Austin-Smith:Lord coordinated the work of six architects and artists within the overall scheme.
Designed in 2005, 3 Piccadilly Place was the first office building in the North West of England to achieve the BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating.
Piccadilly Place is an area of public realm in which everyone can be proud. This stunning space is an impressive welcome to the UK’s second city for the millions of visitors that come through Piccadilly, while simultaneously offering a cool oasis of calm in the centre of it all. The red clay paver is reminiscent of many of Manchester’s historic mills and Victorian municipal buildings and forges an important link between the contemporary piazza and the city around it.

- THREE PICCADILLY PLACE
Located within the city centre and the Piccadilly Regeneration area, Piccadilly Place is a mixed use development of 97,000 square metres comprising offices, hotel, residential apartments, shopping, food and drink over three levels of underground parking. The gateway site creates a new entrance to Manchester whether arriving by train or by car from the South.
The masterplan augments existing routes around and through the site with the creation of a new pedestrian footbridge connecting to Piccadilly Station. Austin-Smith:Lord’s masterplan is realised through buildings by several architects including our own Three Piccadilly Place, 250,000 sqft of speculative office space clad in a copper zinc alloy.
Austin-Smith:Lord has risen to the challenge of this complex city centre project, coordinating the work of six architects and various artists within their overall scheme. They have responded to the various interests of our joint landowners, Manchester City Council and Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive; Planning and Building Control and Council Access Officers, amongst others.
We continue to be impressed with the commitment and service that Austin-Smith:Lord has and continues to provide.

A major element of the Speke Garston regeneration programme. Masterplanning, development of the landscape infrastructure, detailed design and implementation

- BOULEVARD INDUSTRY PARK
Boulevard Industry Park forms a major element of the Speke Garston regeneration programme. Austin-Smith:Lord undertook the masterplanning role for the site and also developed the landscape infrastructure through detail design to implementation. The main spine road was designed to produce a strong, consistent, unifying image linking the various developments proposed for the site. The spine road also incorporated a section of the Transpennine Trail, with its own unique, yet contextual design approach.
Our challenge was to deliver not just one “machine” for production and delivery, but six on one route. Not only critical logistics, but a standard building design that responds to functional need and is precisely cost predictable. In addition, the external environment reflects and reinforces Jaguar Land Rover’s brand.
We developed a family of high throughput facilities in a road-based logistics system designed for multiple redundancy and failure. The facilities allow for system retro-fit without interruption of operations.
Occupiers include Evans Vaccines, Conix, Lear Corporation, Coughlin Logistics, Medeva (Medimmune), Visteon, Infast, Stadco and Chiron, with buildings and plot development undertaken by Austin-Smith: Lord.

Ford Diesel Centre Dagenham
Austin-Smith:Lord was appointed designer of the masterplan for this 35-hectare Ford plant in East London, from detail design to implementation, as well as to work on a new Diesel Centre. The project turned the existing plot of land into a supplier park and a centre of excellence for the manufacture of diesel engines for the Ford Motor Company.
Designed as a landmark scheme within the Thames Gateway redevelopment, this state-of-the-art car factory is considered an exemplar project. The plans for Ford’s high-tech diesel engineering and manufacturing facility combine product development and assembly in an innovative workplace environment that integrates the designers and engineers with their manufacturing colleagues to increase Dagenham’s diesel engine build capacity.

The underside of the striking form of the concourse roof is clad in anodized aluminium sheeting, creating a strong focal point over the key entrance area
Transport for Greater Manchester commissioned Austin-Smith:Lord to design a replacement nineteen stand £15.7m bus station in Wigan Town Centre; which will provide a fully accessible covered passenger concourse, with designated waiting areas with information points and seating. The underside of the striking form of the concourse roof is clad in anodized aluminium sheeting, creating a strong focal point over the key entrance area. Large areas of glass and two large ETFE roof lights contribute to making this a bright and welcoming space. In consideration of the key heritage areas of Wigan the other key material is facing brickwork, in two different tones.
The design includes more attractive routes to and from the town centre for pedestrians, reducing the number of pedestrian crossing points across the site from fourteen to two. The covered concourse will also improve passenger comfort and weather protection with improved passenger information; Improved accessibility into and across the town to employment, education, leisure, retail and other travel modes.
The project significantly contributes to the regeneration of Wigan Town Centre by delivering a new, more attractive bus station that complements the wider town centre development. As a reflection of the outline brief the design incorporates a new Travelshop, coffee shop facilities, new newsagents, high quality fully accessible toilets, and a baby changing and changing places facility. A stand alone cycle parking facility is also provided set within a new urban realm area which fronts one of the key pedestrian approaches to the station.
The project was completed in October 2018.
Working alongside A-S:L on the Wigan Bus Station project, from concept through to completion, was a very positive experience. A-S:L were fully committed to not only delivering work to a high standard but also fulfilling various stakeholder requirements which were made possible through collaborative design reviews. In addition, A-S:L brought experience and innovation to the design which ultimately resulted in a building which is both functional and iconic.
Early in this project there were a number of affordability challenges but A-S:L worked collaboratively with the client and the wider design team to deliver a building which bettered the aspirations of the client and the travelling public but was also delivered on budget and to time. Since completion the positive response to the design from the public has been overwhelming.
