Chris joined Austin-Smith:Lord in 1996 following a successful career in Liverpool and Hong Kong, after his graduation from Manchester Polytechnic in 1989. He became an associate in 1999. He is particularly knowledgeable on landscape design and project leadership. His major project achievements include work on the Civic Public Realm and the Millennium Scheme.

Colin Miller

Colin Miller

Colin has over 20 years of experience in architectural practice and, through his work with ASL, has developed strong skills across a wide range of sectors. His portfolio includes the delivery of numerous new-build schemes as well as interior refurbishment and fit-out projects. While Colin often leads the early design stages, he brings a thorough and methodical approach to design coordination and detailing throughout all project phases.

He provides technical and coordination support across all studios, drawing on his broad knowledge of construction techniques and design standards. Colin has also built significant expertise in the Healthcare Sector and utilises his proficiency in Revit, AutoCAD, and the Adobe Creative Suite to support high-quality project delivery.

Catherine Cosgrove

Joining Austin-Smith:Lord in 2006, Catherine brought to the practice more than fourteen years experience in the commercial, retail, public and housing sectors. Despite her varied portfolio, however, her main area of interest and expertise is in Sustainable Design. Catherine is continually developing practical, applicable methods of introducing sustainable best practice into all aspects of Austin-Smith: Lord work. She is the Environmental Manager within Austin-Smith: Lord and has written and implemented the ISO 14001 standard throughout the practice. Catherine became an Associate in 2015.

Neil Alexander

Neil Alexander

STUDIO LEADERSHIP : GLASGOW

Neil joined Austin-Smith:Lord in 2008, progressing from a year out ‘part 1’ student of the Mackintosh School of Architecture to a qualified architect. He makes a strong contribution to the Glasgow Studio, running a number of large scale projects.

Neil has gained significant experience in the fields of social housing, transportation and education through various developments in and around the West of Scotland, Northern England, South Wales and the Middle East. Working on both design & build and traditionally procured contracts, Neil has gained a rounded knowledge of sector requirements, varied construction techniques and design standards utilising drawn, CAD and BIM software packages to progress design and construction information.

Tim Young

Tim Young

SECTOR LEAD : EDUCATION

Tim is a highly respected designer, creating elegant and inspiring architectural solutions with a high degree of pragmatism. Whilst possessing a broad range of experience, Tim has developed specialist expertise in the Further and Higher Education sectors.

His design flair has been recognised through three RIBA Awards; for his Cardiff School of Management at Cardiff Metropolitan University in 2011, for Guildford ‘G-Live’ Concert venue in 2012, and for the Cardiff School of Art and Design in 2014. He has a studio-wide role in championing design quality.

Tim became a Director of Austin-Smith:Lord in 2016.

Andrew McCafferty

Andrew McCafferty

SECTOR LEAD: INDUSTRY  + INFRASTRUCTURE

HEAD OF ARCHITECTURE

ARB registered in 1988, Andrew has over twenty nine years post qualification experience in private architectural practice in Scotland and North of England. Having joined Austin-Smith: Lord in October 2008, Andrew was promoted to Associate in January 2010, Director in 2014 and is currently Principal for the Glasgow studio.

Andrew is versatile working in most sectors – commercial, retail, industrial, education, healthcare and transportation. He is experienced in a lead consultant role, coordinating design teams, committed to project delivery and has an excellent track record in both building refurbishment and new build.

Andrew has lectured at the University of Strathclyde as part of the university’s practice management curriculum and as part of APEAS is responsible for examining RIBA part 3 candidates for professional qualification.

SECTOR LEAD : ARTS + CULTURE

Graham is an architect, urban designer and planner. Graham joined Austin-Smith:Lord as a graduate in 1998. He became a Partner in 2010 and CEO in 2020.

Graham has led and delivered projects in numerous sectors including; urban regeneration, mixed-use development, housing, higher education, healthcare, arts and culture, public art and public space design, participatory planning, active travel and public transport projects.

He is passionate about design education, research and the circular economy. He is an Honorary Professor at University of Dundee, frequently tutors at other schools of architecture, has contributed to published research for Scottish Government and is an active member of Circular Glasgow’s Circular Economy Leadership Programme.

Graham was Depute Chair of Architecture and Design Scotland from 2010 until 2019, became a Fellow of the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland in 2014 and was part of the creative team selected for Scotland’s contribution to the Venice Architecture Biennale in 2018. His work has won numerous awards including RIAS and Scottish Design Awards.

As a Company Board member with over 38 years of architectural experience, Martin combines key practice-wide leadership roles with pro-active involvement in projects, particularly those within the housing, mixed use and commercial sectors. His highly collaborative approach and experience have positively influenced the successful delivery of projects across a wide range of sectors for both public and private sector clients.

Martin has further practice-wide responsibilities for Quality and Environmental Management, Health and Safety, Business Development and Marketing.

Neil Chapman

SECTOR LEAD : URBAN REGENERATION + CIVIC

HEAD OF URBAN DESIGN

Working in Hong Kong, Neil focused almost entirely on urban design and, in particular, upon the creation of a series of New Town Parks and major infrastructure projects throughout the New Territories. Since returning to the UK, he has continued in this field and as Executive Director for Landscape and Urban Design at Austin-Smith:Lord, his portfolio includes a variety of landscape and townscape projects, for both public and private sector clients, including the recently completed ‘heart-space for Teesside University .
